As mentioned in our email yesterday, we are providing an update on volunteer opportunities for Jefferson County Schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. First Priority Greater Birmingham President Greg Davis met with the Jefferson County Board of Education this morning about how First Priority can assist Neighbors for Nutrition. Birmingham City Schools (BCS) is prepared to serve free meals to students during the extended school closure beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 3, 2020. The district will offer meal services weekdays at 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for students during the closure. Grab-and-go meal options will be provided at all schools Monday, March 16, 2020 through Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Grab-and-go meals will include fruit, milk and other non-perishable items.

The district will offer expanded meal services beginning Thursday, March 19, 2020 through Friday, April 3, 2020 at select locations set to be announced Monday. Expanded meals will include sandwiches, fruit, cereal, milk and non-perishable items. An extended meal service plan will be provided as needed following April 5, 2020.
BCS leaders are grateful for the outreach of those offering to provide meal support for scholars. The district invites any individuals and organizations offering to provide support to email BCS_Eats@bhm.k12.al.us.

Beginning Monday, March 16-Friday March 27, our food service department will be serving meals at all of our school buildings from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. School-age students may visit any building to receive a lunch. The lunch will be grab-and-go style. Students will also receive a breakfast that can be utilized the following day. Students who currently receive a free or reduced lunch will continue to receive that benefit. Students who are not eligible for a free or reduced lunch will be able to purchase a lunch at the regular school lunch price. Lunch service will not be continued during the week of spring break, March 30 through April 3.

Student meals will be available at Green Valley Elementary School Monday-Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These will be drive-up, grab-and-go bagged meals. Green Valley Elementary School is located at 3200 Old Columbiana Road, Hoover, AL 35226.

We will set this up as a grab & go from 11 a.m. to noon first come first served. We ask that you enter the LMS cafeteria at the rear of the building (on the stadium side). We will make a determination at the end of the week whether there is a need/desire in the community to provide lunch for additional weeks.

Children do not have to be enrolled in St. Clair Schools to receive a meal. Tarrant City Schools are providing grab and go breakfast and lunch to children (age 18 and under) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week (March 18-20). For those who are able to come pick meals up at Tarrant Intermediate School, we will be serving from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

For the more remote neighborhood of Springdale, volunteers from Church of the Highlands will deliver meals and serve in the parking lot of Springdale Baptist Church from 11:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day. For the neighborhoods of Brummitt/Tarrant Heights, volunteers will deliver and serve from 11:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day. And for the neighborhood of Robinwood, volunteers will deliver and serve from 11:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day. Children must be present to receive meals, children do not have to be Tarrant City School students, and everyone should stay in their cars to be served. Meal service will resume after Spring Break on Monday, March 30, and will serve each day of that week at the same times. Children will be provided a lunch intended for consumption on the day of receipt and a breakfast for the following day. Destiny Covenant will provide lunch meals for students during Spring Break (3/23-3/27). These meals will be supplied free-of-charge from a USDA Certified school meal provider. The Spring Break distribution will issue from Central Baptist/Destiny Covenant Church each day (3/23-3/27) from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This distribution will issue directly from the truck and recipients will drive up to get them. We have requested 500 meals to start. This number might increase based on how many the school system actually distributes this week.
Trussville City Schools

Students who live in the Cahaba Heights, Dolly Ridge, and Liberty Park communities can pick up at Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights. Please note, out of an abundance of caution, we will not be allowing students or families to enter these schools during meal pickup times.
