More than a few times in my nearly 16 years on staff with First Priority, I have been asked the question, “What is First Priority?” I think the easiest way to answer this question is to simply say, “It’s a Birmingham metro-wide ministry movement focused on touching students’ lives with the Gospel.” The best thing about this movement is that anyone can be a part of it.
One entry point of this movement is for students themselves. First Priority helps Christian students unite on nearly 200 campuses in our area. Although students go to hundreds of different churches, they can unite as one on their school campus through First Priority. First Priority clubs, which involve approximately 15,000 students, meet weekly on school campuses and serve as the hub of this movement.
Another entry point for this ministry is for adults. Community by community, First Priority helps adults from local churches unite. Youth leaders, parents and concerned adults organize to mentor, guide, financially support and pray for these First Priority students living out their faith on their own local campuses. First Priority adult networks meet all across our area on a monthly basis as well.
Lastly, some adults and businesses choose to plug into First Priority on a city level. They see the big picture need to organize this important ministry not only on their own school campuses in their community, but also on a broader level for all campuses and communities. These important city leaders offer financial support and organizational leadership that facilitate this city-wide movement.
This is a movement with a goal to touch every student, on every campus, in every community with the love and message of Jesus Christ before they graduate high school.
